Breastfeeding Peer Support Training: A Train-the-Trainer Workshop – Sudbury

This workshop has been approved for 9.0 Continuing Education Recognition Points (L-CERPS) by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE).

Description:

This workshop will be presented over one and a half days to introduce participants to the Breastfeeding Peer Support Training Toolkit. Participants will acquire the knowledge and practice skills to take the toolkit back to their organizations and train breastfeeding peer support volunteers in their communities. Each participant will receive a Breastfeeding Peer Support Training Toolkit which will include module outlines and content, teaching activities, slides and speaker notes, evaluation templates and other forms and templates to support the development of a breastfeeding peer support program and the crucial component of training peers to be.

The objectives for this workshop include:

  • Participants will be introduced to the Breastfeeding Peer Support Training Toolkit.
  • Participants will review and practice communication skills to support the peer training and pass on to peers-in-training.
  • Participants will practice skills to facilitate training of peers.
  • Participant will become familiar with the toolkit and how to use it when training peers in their community.

The cost of this workshop is $50 per participant.  Lunch is included both days.

Registration will start at 11:30 a.m. on February 25 and lunch will be served at noon with the workshop following.

Cancellation Policy:

Note: The registration fee includes participant handouts and lunch. Payment must accompany registration form. We will refund your registration fee ONLY if you cancel your registration two weeks before the training session for which you have registered. Cancellation should be notified in writing ONLY. An Administrative Fee of $10 will be retained on the registration fee when processing the refund.

Michelle Buckner, Breastfeeding Buddies Project Coordinator

Michelle Buckner is the mother of 3 breastfed children; 15, 12 and 8. She holds a degree in Social Work.  Michelle has been supporting women and families in the Waterloo region for over 20 years in varying capacities with Family and Children’s Services, Extend a Family, House of Friendship, and recently as the coordinator of the Breastfeeding Buddies program of Waterloo Region. Michelle has been a La Leche League Leader for 10 years and strongly believes in peer breastfeeding support for all women. In 2001, Michelle helped start and develop the current Breastfeeding Buddies program  and  is passionate about positive parenting, promoting and protecting breastfeeding as a normal part of mothering and creating a healthy, vibrant community to raise children in.

Teresa Pitman, Writer
La Leche League Canada

Teresa Pitman has been a La Leche League Leader for more than 35 years and was Executive Director of La Leche League Canada for three years. Teresa has a B.Sc in Chemistry and a diploma in Magazine Journalism. She has written thousands of articles, many on breastfeeding and parenting topics, and is the author or co-author of 18 published books including: The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding (8th edition); Dr. Jack Newman's Guide to Breastfeeding (now in its 3rd edition); The Latch and Other Keys to Breastfeeding Success; and Preparing to Breastfeed: A Pregnant Woman's Guide. She is the mother of four children, all breastfed and the grandmother of seven, also all breastfed.
